I completely understand the desire to keep it open between the kitchen and lower level because you want to keep the sight lines and feeling--but perhaps you should just "try" closing it off and see how it feels. There is a haze to the floors as someone posted its most likely due to the matte finish. We went with that because the sample board looked exactly like the bare sanded wood, which is what we wanted. It offers a bigger margin of profit. The real way this is tested is actually even meaner to the floor - normally you take a box cutter, cross-hatch the floor (IE cut it in a grid pattern), and then put the tape on it and rip it up.
